The classification of an Emergency Transport Request.
Duplicate or multiple calls to a TRANSPORT REQUEST INCIDENT where a response has already been activated should have the same RESPONSE CATEGORY as the original Emergency Transport Request that activated the response.
The following calls are counted as RESPONSE CATEGORY 'Category C: other emergency calls which are not immediately life threatening or serious':
- a hang-up before coding is complete,
- the caller is not with the PATIENT and is unable to give details,
- the caller refuses to give details,
- hoax calls where response is not activated
- the response is cancelled before coding is complete (e.g. the PATIENT recovers).
Once a RESPONSE CATEGORY is determined and an Emergency Response is activated, the category given should not subsequently be altered for reporting purposes. For operational reasons, a service may subsequently upgrade or downgrade the category, but reporting should remain against the original category.
National Codes:
A | Category A: immediately life threatening - presenting conditions which require a fully equipped Emergency Ambulance to attend the incident |
B | Category B: serious but not immediately life threatening |
C | Category C: other emergency calls which are not immediately life threatening or serious |
