An indicator of whether non-smoking status confirmation has been confirmed by carbon monoxide validation, attempted but not confirmed or confirmation was not attempted at the 4 week follow-up after the SMOKING QUIT DATE.
A machine called a carbon monoxide monitor or Smokelyser is used to detect the amount of carbon monoxide in the breath and therefore to detect whether someone is still smoking. For the purposes of carbon monoxide validation, any carbon monoxide reading of less than 10 parts per million should be taken as an indication that the PERSON is not smoking at the time.
National Codes:
1 | Non-smoking status confirmed by carbon monoxide validation |
2 | Not confirmed - attempt has been made to contact the PERSON for carbon monoxide validation or carbon monoxide validation done but non-smoking status not confirmed. An 'attempt' should comprise a minimum of three separate attempts to contact the PERSON via telephone, text or email in order to arrange a face-to-face carbon monoxide validation. |
8 | Not Applicable (e.g. PERSON self reports as smoker at 4 weeks, confirmation not attempted as telephone service only or they are 'lost to follow-up') |
