The General Functioning Subscale has been widely used as a brief method of assessing overall family functioning. It is designed to be completed by family members over 12 years of age.
Each item is rated from 1 (Strongly Agree) to 4 (Strongly Disagree) with negatively worded items being reverse scored and missing values rated as 99. A total score can be calculated from the valid summed item scores and divided by 12.
