Radiotherapy is a specialist service provided in approximately 50 sites in England (60 in the United Kingdom). The majority of PATIENTS receiving treatment are not admitted to hospital. As a result data has not been collected centrally in the past.

The Radiotherapy Data Set is intended to collect data already held in technical databases on radiotherapy equipment, and to centralise these data for use for commissioning radiotherapy and also for service planning and clinical audit.
