The Maternity Services Data Set is submitted to the Health and Social Care Information Centre (HSCIC) using the Maternity Data Set Message.

In addition, further guidance for submissions is provided by the Health and Social Care Information Centre on the Health and Social Care Information Centre website.

A Maternity Services Data Set submission must only contain data relating to one ORGANISATION CODE (CODE OF PROVIDER) for one REPORTING PERIOD.

Maternity Submission Identifier

The Maternity Submission Identifier contains data items which are used by the Health and Social Care Information Centre to manage data upon receipt.

The Mandatory, Required or Optional (M/R/O) column indicates the requirements for inclusion of data:

• M = this data element is mandatory and the technical process (e.g. submission of the data set, production of output etc) cannot be completed without this data element being present.
