The Female Genital Mutilation Prevalence Data Set collects information about the incidence and treatment of PATIENTS who have undergone Female Genital Mutilation. It does not include PATIENTS who have a family history of Female Genital Mutilation, but have not undergone the procedure themselves.
The data is collected on a monthly basis from Health Care Providers of NHS-funded care, including independent sector and social enterprise/voluntary organisations. Private and self-funded PATIENTS in NHS Health Care Providers are excluded.
The Female Genital Mutilation Prevalence Data Set consists of 3 sections:
- PATIENTS first identified within the REPORTING PERIOD as having undergone Female Genital Mutilation split by FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION AGE CATEGORY and FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION TYPE.
- PATIENTS who were identified as having undergone Female Genital Mutilation prior to the REPORTING PERIOD, and who are still being actively seen/treated by the Health Care Provider (i.e. they have not been discharged and are on the active caseload of the Health Care Provider) for any condition, whether related to the Female Genital Mutilation or not, as at the REPORTING PERIOD END DATE. This is split by FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION AGE CATEGORY.
- Number of CARE CONTACT activities undertaken for the active caseload and newly-identified PATIENTS during the REPORTING PERIOD, split by TREATMENT FUNCTION CODE. This includes any attendances at an Out-Patient Clinic led by any type of CARE PROFESSIONAL, Hospital Provider Spells, Accident and Emergency Attendances, Group Therapy, Ward Attendances; or any other type of direct PATIENT-facing CARE CONTACT; and the number of deinfibulation Patient Procedures undertaken (first and repeat), both to facilitate childbirth or undertaken outside of the maternity environment. Note: for TREATMENT FUNCTION CODES where there have been no CARE CONTACT activities undertaken for the active caseload or newly-identified PATIENTS during the REPORTING PERIOD, there is no requirement to report a zero value for that TREATMENT FUNCTION CODE.
Further guidance on the creation and submission of the data set can be requested by emailing FGM@dh.gsi.gov.uk.
